Clavier

Description

Clavier (in Walloon Clavier) is a French speaking municipality in Belgium located in the Walloon Region, the province of Liège, as well as a locality where its administration headquarters is located.

The Town Description

On the 1st of January 2016, Population (4547 people), (2264 men and 2283 women), a density of 57.47 inhabitants per km2 and a surface area of ​​79.12 km2.

The municipality consists of six sections following the merger of the municipalities in the year 1977: Clavier, Bois-et-Borsu, Avins, Ocquier, Pailhe, and Terwagne.

It is part of the district of Huy and is part of the Economic Regional Group of valleys of the Ourthe and Amblève (GREOA).

The villages of Ocquier, Les Avins, Pailhe and the hamlets of Vervoz and Saint-Fontaine are among the most beautiful places (condrusiennes) built of limestone.

Geography

With an area of ​​79.12 km2, Clavier is a rural community with little industry, with some SMEs, blue stone quarries and extraction of 100 000 m3 of drinking water.

Before the merger of the municipalities in the year 1977, Clavier was already a town itself, which included the villages and hamlets of Atrin, Clavier -Station, Clavier -Village, Ochain, Pair, Petit Brin, Ponthoz, Saint-Fontaine and Vervoz .

  • Clavier -Village is a small village built on a stem of the condroz at an altitude of 305 m. Around the church building and the municipal administration building, are few farms, farmhouses and other houses. The village extends to the east by the hamlet of Atrin, extending also on te same stem.
  • Clavier -Station has developed around the railway station of line 126 Huy-Ciney. Now disused, this station and line now see cyclists and walkers using the RAVeL network. The village is very extensive and includes many houses mostly built in the twentieth century. In addition, Clavier-Station has an elementary school, a church dedicated to Saint Anthony, several shops, the headquarters of the CPAS established in the premises of the former gendarmerie and football club fields of the Clavinoise.

History

The lordship of Atrin (of the Latin Merovingian atrium, 'parvis', 'cemetery'), is mentioned for the first time in the year 959, then writing 'Aretino' ( 'small atrium'), in a deed of gift to the Abbey of Stave lot. It was owned by the lords of Houffalize in the fourteenth century, King John of Bohême and families of the Tower of Brialmont and finally Méan until the French Revolution.

The Castel of Val d'Or is an inn with 15 rooms located within Clavier. It dates to 1654.
