Description
The Solar do Unhão is a 16th century building bathed by the Bay of All Saints and one of the most incredible sunset views in Salvador. Created in 1960 in the foyer of the Castro Alves Theater, it was only in 1963 that the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia (MAM-BA) had the site as its definitive headquarters.
The Italian architect Lina Bo Bardi created the MAM-BA project with the intention of creating a school museum to encourage and expose the cultural production of the Northeast region. The main modification that the architect made in the structure of the Solar do Unhão was to demolish the second floor of the house, creating a large wooden staircase, only with fittings and without nails, reproducing those used in ox cars. Despite Lina's importance to MAM-BA , the architect was fired in 1964 with the Military Coup.
It is considered the main space for contemporary art in Bahia and one of the most important in the country, where it passes an audience of approximately 200 thousand people per year. Its five exhibition halls usually receive works by well-known artists in Brazil and abroad. The museum features an open air gallery (Sculpture Park) and a movie theater, as well as the Rubem Valentim Room.Artistic-cultural events of different languages and educational and artistic actions are part of the MAM-BA program . One of the highlights of the museum are the Workshops of MAM, which completed 31 years of existence in 2011.
