Salvador Zoo

Description

Getúlio Vargas Zoobotanical Park , or Zoológico de Salvador , is a zoo located in Salvador , capital of the state of Bahia . Part of the total 700 thousand square meters of land is occupied by 250 thousand square meters of vegetation , the Zoo's Forest. The park is located in the district of Ondina , more specifically in Alto de Ondina, hill that also is address of the Palace of Ondina , official residence of the governors .  It was created in 1958, according to state decree nº 17.481. There are 1500 existing animals belonging to 142 different species.The zoo is run by the state government and is linked to the State Department of the Environment of the State of Bahia (SEMA), as well as the Metropolitan Park of Pituaçu and the Metropolitan Park of Abaeté .

The place is open to public visitation. In it, academic researches are carried out , conservation and preservation of plants and animals , activities focused on environmental education , veterinary clinic .

In the zoo, there are the 950 square meters of the Zoo Garden, physical library with 1,500 titles, virtual library , and Museum of Natural History (museum of taxidermy created in 1979). 

The origin of the zoo's land dates back to the 19th century, Fazenda Areia Preta (the present district of Ondina ) received as indemnification by the Swiss Frederico Meuron for losses in the Battle of Pirajá . After a period of abandonment, some activities begin in the area, such as the construction of an orchard . 

The symbol animal of the zoo is the Lear's Macaw ( Anodorhynchus leari ), an endangered bird endemic to Catherine's Raso .
