Geological Museum of Bahi

Description

The Museu Geológico da Bahia ( MGB ) is a Brazilian museum located on Avenida Sete de Setembro , in the Corredor da Vitória , in Salvador .

The MGB has structures, facilities and collections that are similar to some of the best museums of the same theme, operating in the United States and Europe .

After reopening in March 2002, it became a good choice for students to gain new insights into geology , mineralogy , gemstones , mining , history and other subjects. Linked to the Department of Industry, Commerce and Mining of the State of Bahia, the museum is already becoming a new cultural and leisure center.

Among the rarities of its collection are the sodalite-sienito Azul Bahia, typical of Bahia, internationally quoted at around US $ 500 each / square meter, and a replica of Bendegó Meteorite , the largest Brazilian meteorite, found in 1784 , in the Bahia municipality of Monte Santo and ranked 11th in the world.

In a room called Energy of Crystals there are very interesting pieces such as gems and semiprecious stones , crystal balls and crafts made with shells. Another room is reserved for the Otto Billian collection, founder of the Bahian Mineral Company . For 50 years he has assembled a collection of more than four thousand pieces, including quartz crystals , precious stones, minerals and replicas of famous diamonds , as well as books, magazines and manuscripts that speak on the subject. It also has a comfortable auditorium with capacity for 125 people and equipped with slide projector, digital sound system and technological resources. From Tuesday to Sunday, the space functions as the Cinema of the Museum, with a predominant program of art films. On other days, the auditorium is intended for educational activities, cultural and scientific events.
