Description
Pierre Verger Foundation ( FPV ) is a Brazilian museum . The foundation was created by Pierre Verger in 1988 , in the city of Salvador , Bahia , as a Private Law, non-profit, with administrative and financial autonomy. It works in the same house where Pierre Verger lived for years, in Ladeira da Vila América, in Salvador. Elaborated with the help of a group of friends, the foundation was, until the death of Pierre, directed by the photographer himself. His friend and companion, Carybé , succeeded him as president. After the death of Carybé, its daughter, Solange Bernabó, exerted the position of director until the appointment of a new president, Gilberto Pedreira de Freitas Sá, in 2001 .
As founder, maintainer and president, he donated to the foundation all of his personal collection, gathered in decades of travel and research. There are dozens of articles, books, 62,000 photographic negatives, sound recordings, film and video films, as well as a precious collection of documents, fiches, correspondences, manuscripts and objects.
Testimony of Pierre Verger in the first FPV newsletter:
The creation of the Pierre Verger Foundation was the consequence of two of my loves: what I feel for Bahia and the one I have for the region of Africa , situated in the Gulf of Benin . Through its objectives and activities, it proposes to highlight this common heritage by offering Bahia what it knows about Benin and Nigeria and informing them of their cultural influences in Bahia.
The museum functions as a collection to the public and researchers. It has a library, photo collection and personal collection of Verger. There is the release of use of photographs on all media, through a request and following the current procedures. Sale of analogue enlargements are produced from the original negatives. An interesting service is the availability of free courses and workshops for the general public, and especially for the community of the district of Engenho Velho de Brotas.
