Mercado Modelo

Description

Built in 1861 to function as Casa da Alfândega, Mercado Modelo maintains the original neoclassical architecture even after having suffered two fires (1969 and 1984). Touched by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute, the space houses hundreds of boxes selling from bonfim ribbons to clothes and household items. For there, the rule is to bargain because of the high prices practiced by some shopkeepers. In addition to the handicraft fair, the market has as attractive the capoeira wheels that move the back of the building on Saturdays.
