Description
The Sé is a neighborhood in the central region of the city of Salvador, in the State of Bahia. Its name refers to the existence in the area of the old Cathedral of Bahia, erected after 1552 and demolished in 1933 for the construction of a tramway to the Sé Terminal (Sé Square).
In this same space there is the monument of the Fallen Cross , a work by Mario Cravo, erected in honor of the former Church of the See. Project by the architect Assis Reis in a new perspective of belvedere.
The space owns one of the most beautiful views of the city - especially at sunset. Around and half the postcard hosts events such as concerts and electronic parties. The public appreciates, after all, besides enjoying the party, it is possible to enjoy a beautiful view.
In the seventeenth century the church served as a fortress against the Dutch invaders and in 1808 it hosted the Te Deum in honor of the arrival of King John VI and the royal entourage to Salvador. The church had its condition of Sé lost to the Church of the Savior in 1765, but its historical importance continued until its last days.
The same reform that brought criticism to the destruction of the historical patrimony (demolition of the Cathedral of the Cathedral), represented by the fallen cross, destroyed the drawing made in Portuguese stones that were in the pavement, replacing the floor by granite. In addition, an archaeological excavation was carried out on the foundations of the Old Cathedral, which resulted in the creation of four archaeological sites, whose rescue of objects and bones was being conducted by a team from the UFBA Museum of Archeology and Ethnology.
