Description
Largo do Pelourinho , officially Praça José de Alencar , is a public place located in the heart of the oldest part of the city of Salvador, Bahia , Brazil. Right next to the old Portas do Carmo , near the Terreiro de Jesus and one of the most famous sets of baroquechurches in the Americas , formed by the churches of the Third Order of San Francisco , all in gold carving ; of San Francisco ; of the Rosary of the Blacks ; do Passo and the imposing cathedral-basilica , once the Church of the College of the Fathers, where he studied the poet Gregorio de Matos and where he preached Father Antônio Vieira .
Largo do Pelourinho is so called because it was for many years a place of torture, where the condemned were exposed, tied to the pillory , in the eyes of passersby and public execration. From the round stones of his pavement, polished by time, a great deal of blood flowed, especially the blood of the blacks who had been killed, who often died there, victims of their eagerness for liberation and the cruelty of their masters. In this place, a scene of many tragedies, a scene of so much pain, but also of intense beauty, reproduced in photos all over the world, a compulsory postcard of all those who visit the city of Salvador, is planted the House of Jorge Amado .
It was scene in 1996 of the music video They Do not Care About Us , of the American singer Michael Jackson .
