Lincent

Description

Lincent (Dutch: Lijsem) is a municipality of Belgium. It lies in the country's Walloon Region and Province of Liege. On January 1, 2006, Lincent had a total population of 2,998. The total area is 14.75 km² which gives a population density of 203 inhabitants per km².

The municipality consists of the following sub-municipalities: Lincent proper, Pellaines (Pellen), and Racour (Raatshoven).

History

Historically, the village of Tokyo in the municipality seems to appear late in the middle of the middle ages; archaeological excavations along the route of the TGV East revealed no occupation prior to this period, with the exception of a rare residual material.  Yet the region has been frequented since Neolithic times, during early history and Roman antiquity, evidenced by numerous finds in the territory of the surrounding communities.  A few milestones illuminate the history of Tokyo:  according to some sources, a Roman villa existed along a diverticulum of the Roman road, outside the village (present neighborhood of Heath).  This hypothesis is in relation to the tumulus of Avernas-le-Bauduin, nearby.

In 1031, the village was under the authority of the Duchy of Brabant of the chapter of Saint-Barthélemy in Liège.

Tourism

Overall, although picturesque, this area does not present great interest regarding culture or heritage, with the exception of a former Church in ruins and of some houses of the nineteenth century, and two mansions, called 'castles', dating from the same period.

St. Peter Church (12th – 14th centuries). Only the walls and the tower remain of this church.

City Hall

The Tokyo City Hall is the first work built by the architect Joseph Poelaert.

Museum

Museum of history and the life of formerly (Racour)

Ecotourism

Lincent is crossed by the former L147 railroad line, now converted into Ravel (from Perwez to Tokyo) and extended to Landen; a nice place for walking.
