Natural and Agrarian

Description

For those who live in busy urban areas, Natural and Agrarian Museum is where they can find interesting exhibits.

The museum's five thematic exhibitions are devoted to the Geography of Macao, Farming Tools of the Islands in Olden Days, the Lives of Farmers, Specimens of Animals, and Specimens of Plants. It also features a simulated mangrove swamp. By viewing its displays and exhibits, visitors can get a better picture of old farming tools and Macao's poultry farming in the past. Exhibits include old agricultural tools that are no longer in use today, such as a water wheel, winnower and grain mill. Displayed outdoors is a lively statue showing how a farmer worked for his living.

The museum houses many specimens of insects and plants. Among them is a huge sweet potato 1.4 meters long, which grew in Macao under a special environment. Another fascinating exhibit is a sea coconut seed from the Seychelles, the Coco de mer, which is said to be one of the largest seed specimens in the world.

Displaying mostly household items from farmers' homes, however, this museum is an extremely valuable treasure for urban residents. It nourishes our tarnished souls and enriches the young generation's knowledge of the lives of peasants and their relationship with Mother Nature. Hopefully, the museum will strengthen people's understanding of the importance of environmental protection; otherwise the nature would soon extinct and become another museum exhibit.
