Description
Rufisque is a city in Senegal, located 25 kilometres to the southeast of Dakar. The population was about 490 694 inhabitants as of 2013 census.
This locality constitutes the "South Gate" of the urban area of Dakar, the passage is required to enter into the capital or out on the south side. Indeed, the peninsula of Dakar waters the small-coast(petit-cote) through a city full of history. Beyond the real estate speculation (the new international airport Blaise Diagne is being built not far from the city), Rufisque is today a new Senegalese reference. The old trading traditions tend to become accustomed to an inevitable europeanisation.

History
The history of the city go higher to the sixteenth century when the fishing village was founded and named Teung-Guedj. In fact, in wolof, the city bears the name of Tengeej.
The Portuguese trading post, the town becomes Rufisco, but the etymology of this name remains controversial. It could be Rio fresco (fresh river), refresco (haven of freshness) or even rio fusco (black river).
In June 1880, like Dakar, Gorée and Saint-Louis, the city was built in the town of full exercise by France, while Senegal was colonized by the French people. Its inhabitants have French citizenship (the status of the four town).
During the second world war, in September 1940 a place of landing for the Allies in Rufisque during the operation threat aimed at rally Dakar and AOF in the liberated France general of Gaulle. The attempt is a failure and two free Frenchmen were killed in Rufisque by legalistic advocates who remained loyal to Vichy.
Cultural heritage
The city of Rufisque has a rich cultural heritage that is dominated largely by the Lebou culture. The Lebou of Rufisque are fishermen by professions in large part and everything revolves around the ocean and seafood. Npeup, are practice always on the shores of the Ocean despite the strong Islamic presence in the community.
