Diawara

Description

Diawara is a town in the Eastern Senegal, situated on the left bank of the Senegal river, on the border with Mauritania and not far from Mali.

The Senegalese city of Diawara is located on the East of Senegal, on the left bank of the Senegal River not far from the Mauritanian and the Malian borders. It is a Senegalese village, little in urbanized and strong in their customs and traditions. Diawara is profoundly a Muslim village, it is also the only religion that exists in the village. The first inhabitants of the village were the Wakene Sakho from Mali. These first inhabitants were at the beginning, the village leaders. Today this notion of leaders no longer has the same importance, and it is rather the mayor who is now in charge.

History

Diawara is a town composed primarily of Soninke (sarakholes) originally. the founders are the Sakho, just after the breakingup of the Ghana empire, the families that constitute this empire are scatters throughout West Africa. The Sakho also hold the title of the Village Chief, but in the year 2002 Diawara was erected as a town.

The first mayor of Diawara town was Makha Sakho, then in March 2009 Hamidou Koita succeeded him. Since July 2014 Kille Sakho is the new mayor

Geography

The  South of Diawara are the villages of Yelingara, Manael, Tuabou and the town of Bakel, which is located about 18 km from Diawara; and then in the North there are Galadé, Gandé villages and the  Moudéry and Dembancane town.
