Museum of Archaeology

Description

Museum of Archaeology and Folklore
It is in this cordial and elegant residence of the 18th century that the Museum is well fitted; if every part deserves attention, the visitor will be delayed perhaps most especially in front of the “ebony cabinets”, encrusted with ivory, scale, alabaster and mother-of-pearl. Their multiple small drawers contained many letters and objects formerly!!

A special attention is also given to the three pianos: the empire style of the two of them dates from the beginning of the 19th century (one of both is found on a “Portrait of young girl”), the third, dates back to 1892, and is a heart-felt memory of one of our great composers, Guillaume Lekeu. Handed over some excellent sculpted furnitures from Liege by some vervietois families, that displayed the internal decoration of the middle class of old.

Other legacies: the old lace collection, admired in particular by the lacemakers of today, which details with pleasure the various lace points to the spindles, with the needle, of application…Would you believe that our men of today, in time past, would be lovers todays?

One also finds there archaeological prehistoric remains or romans discovered in the area of verviety.

One cannot obviously forget to recall that Christmas was also celebrated for the young and old within the Museum, while taking part in Bethlehem verviétois, tasty Walloon tradition of the Midnight suppers of our forefathers.
